Trends in Visual Novels

Nukiges are generally rated poorly, while plot oriented VNs are generally considered best.

You can see that most newbies to the medium are coming from the well-known plot oriented VNs Katawa Shoujo, Fate/Stay Night, and Steins;Gate. However, there’s also quite a few entering via otomes, showing how divided the community is. Those into otomes tend to stay within that genre, and those outside it rarely try otomes.

This basically shows the inverse of the previous newbie chart, highlighting those VNs that have the most experienced fans. Unsurprisingly, this is mainly clustered around the untranslated region, as those learning Japanese for VNs tend to be pretty committed fans who have read extensively.
