Any thoughts on the relatively recent trend of western VNs made using Daz Studio? The market sort of evolved on Patreon when they became the first to allow smutty indie games to be created, and only the most polished examples of the form have made the leap to Steam. Common elements include nukige+plot writing, very large file size, episodic structure, new CG art sometimes every few lines, relatively complex game mechanics, and an overall pre-rendered 3D aesthetic that vaguely imitates realism.

That’s a fantastic question. Sadly my knowledge of the VN sphere is pretty out of date, so I can’t offer more than some random thoughts and wild speculation.

3d rendered porn has existed for decades, never really having much success with its mannequin like posing, but its existence has exploded onto Steam. Whenever I’m scrolling the top rated games in any genre on Steam, you’ll see those Daz Studio porn games listed. So they’re clearly popular with their market for which I think there’s a few possibilities.

  1. It appeals to those who don’t like anime aesthetics.
  2. It caters more to Western preferences in porn instead of Japanese (college vs highschool, enthusiastic vs passive, husky vs chew-toy voice, among many other differences).
  3. The gameplay provides a “I buy it for the articles” excuse.
  4. They provide more interactive/animated porn scenes than the static CGs typical of VNs.

I’d be fascinated to see a breakdown of the ownership of these Daz Studio games vs those who buy VNs. I suspect that prior to the the animated porn scenes there would have been very little overlap, but those scenes now offer something above what VNs deliver and may be driving most of their popularity.

I’m also curious to what extent this may overlap with VR porn, whether folk drawn to try VR for the porn then branch out into these kind of games on Steam.

Lastly, in terms of how this’ll impact the VN market. I don’t think it’ll make a significant difference, those reading VNs for the plot aren’t going to be interested in the cliche scenarios for these Daz studio porn games, and the visual style appeals to radically different tastes. As for their gameplay, if Doki Doki Literature Club’s enormous success didn’t encourage the inclusion of meta/gameplay elements in other VNs then I doubt these Daz studio games will either.

So in summary, I expect these Daz studio games to exist as a parallel fandom with VNs, rather than either cannibalise one another or merge, but we’ll see.

Thanks for the interesting question, have a lovely day!

The VN character quiz website went offline, could it be brought back online?

Oh I didn’t think anyone would still be checking that quiz so I let the hosting expire. I reactivated it just now, but I can’t guarantee it’ll stay up, so have fun with the quiz while it’s still around <3

michel from fata morgana wasn't transgender he was intersex. your review didn't mention intersex at all but it's a big piece of representation for us

That’s a very fair point and in hindsight I should have mentioned that. Thanks for pointing it out!

hope you're alright

Thanks! I’m doing well. As hard as it is to believe, I got a generous commission to write a few short stories. It’s a rather different to the programming/analytics I’m used to in my day job, but it’s been a lot of fun.

Hello! I looked at some of your posts, and it looks like you know how to code. I'm trying to learn programming languages, and you seem to be proficient in Javacode. May you make a post about how you learnt it?

Oh I learnt Java when I went to university. It was the default language they were teaching back in the 2000s. At this point, if you’re looking to pick up programming, I’d recommend a more modern language like Python. codecademy.com is a pretty good resource for picking up the basics of any programming language, I’d suggest starting there and see how you fare.

What algorithm did you use compute the graph in "Mapping the Anime Fandom"? Was it a dimensionality reduction algorithm? If so, what kind? Or did you actually simulate beach balls tied together floating in a pool? As in a physics simulation?

I wrote up a little program in Java to do it. It wasn’t a dimensionality reduced algorithm because I didn’t need to reduce the number of variables, the attraction between nodes was already based only on the single value that corresponded to how much the fandom of two anime overlapped. It wasn’t a real physics simulation, that was just an analogy to simplify the concept for those who might have been intimidated by the maths.

A friend of mine, /u/8cccc9 on reddit, created a really amazing variant that ran the algorithm in 3 dimensions instead of 2. This allowed nodes to more easily slip past each other and reach more optimal locations. I had planned to do a post on the 3d variant of the results but it’s rather hard to display 3d data in a tumblr post, so I never got around to it.

If you’re interested in the gory details, feel free to email (fayeistooldforthis@gmail.com) or message me on twitter and I can go over the exact calculations used (you can also use tumblr but I don’t check tumblr much).

Analysing Anime Fan Priorities

How much does the aesthetic of an anime influence how much you enjoy it? Does it matter more or less than the music? Subjective questions like these can seem unanswerable when applied to the fandom as a whole, but due to the way MyAnimeList splits its review scores into music/animation/story/character/enjoyment categories, we might be able to determine which of these is most influential. We can also see how different genres compare on these categories, and possible differences in how each gender rates anime.

Analysing Steam VN Reviews

image

If the quote “our language is the reflection of ourselves” is true, then what could we learn from Steam user reviews (other than that we deserve every bad game ever published there)? I thought it’d be fun to generate some word clouds of Steam VN user reviews: what words tend to pop up in positive reviews vs negative ones, which words are overused in 18+ VNs, and how old can I make myself feel by seeing all these memes references.

The state of VNs on Steam

image

I’ve recently read a few thoughtful discussion threads on the state of the VN market here in the West. Some taking a negative stance, some with a more positive outlook. I thought I’d try to put some numbers on these statements and look at VN ownership on Steam, still the predominant market for PC games, and use that to analyse whether VNs are on their true route or have stumbled into a bad end.
